This week, we’re saying hello to Matthew Cheung, one of our newest technical programme managers – here to help us scale our data governance and keep Seccl running like a well-oiled (and well-documented) machine.
Where are you from, and where are you based now?
I’m originally from Leeds, studied in Birmingham, and spent most of my working life in London. These days, I’m based in Northampton, and closer to family.
Tell us about your career journey to Seccl
After studying Computer Science for Business, I jumped straight into co-founding a data and analytics startup with a couple of unifriends.
We scraped and transformed public datasets into insights for retail investors – hitting £100k in our first year. It was an intense, hands-on crash course in tech, delivery, and product-market fit.
From there, I joined Currys, where I led data programmes that delivered £600k in cost savings by moving their analytics stack to Azure, Databricks, and Power BI.
Then came Multiplex, a global construction firm, where I helped solve a big visibility challenge: execs couldn’t see how sites were performing across the UK, Australia, Canada, and Dubai. We built a suite of apps to track everything from health and safety to new business forecasting – supporting £50 billion in potential revenue.
What attracted you to Seccl?
Seccl’s at such an exciting stage – scaling up with big ambitions to lead the platform space through tech-first innovation.
What really hooked me was the mission: to automate the slow, manual processes that have held the industry back. With over half the team in engineering, it’s a rare opportunity to be part of a truly tech-led company.
How have your first few weeks been?
It’s been brilliant – meeting loads of talented people, getting under the hood of how everything works, and (I’ll admit) making the most of the sweets jar at the London HQ.
Right now, I’m getting our data governance programme into full swing: identifying pain points, assigning ownership, and putting the right guardrails in place to reduce risk and help us scale smoothly.
What are you most excited about working on?
I’m a bit of a data geek, so I’m excited about how we can use data not just to keep things running – but to drive growth and innovation.
Whether it’s building stronger governance or exploring new ways to monetise data, I’m looking forward to building something exceptional with the team.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
Fun fact – my family runs a Chinese takeaway, and I used to dread taking orders by hand (my handwriting isn’t great).
So, I built a low-code web app that digitised the whole process – even translating orders into Chinese for the chefs. It helped us cut reliance on platforms like Just Eat and Deliveroo, saving over £50,000 a year.
Any unexpected hobbies or hidden talents?
I used to be deep into competitive gaming, especially League of Legends. I won Rank 1 in the National University Esports League and even represented the UK in the EU Masters, where we placed second. That got me backstage access to the championships – meeting pro players and casters.
